Coal-fired power station. Electricity pylons carrying power lines across a field in front of a coal-fired power station. Water vapour can be seen rising from the station's cooling towers. This type of power station burns coal to heat water producing steam which drives a turbine generator. The electricity produced is transferred to towns and cities via power lines, such as those seen in the image. After turning the turbine, the steam is condensed by water in a secondary circuit and returned to be boiled again. The water in the secondary circuit is then cooled by spraying it into the towers.
