Young girl's hair standing on end due to static electricity generated by a Van de Graaff machine. The Van der Graaff produces a static electric charge of one kind only, which becomes distributed over the girl's hair as it is discharged through her body. The electrostatic repulsion produced when like charges are brought together results in the hair standing on end. The Van der Graaff generator consists of a high- voltage supply that "sprays" a charge onto a continuously moving belt of insulating material. The charge is carried by the belt to accumulate on the exterior of a metal dome.
