Caption

Static electricity. Light streamers inside a plas- ma globe. A plasma globe is a hollow ball of glass containing a gas at low pressure. An electric potential is set up between a metal electrode in the centre and the glass sphere. This causes a static discharge to pass through the gas, making its atoms split apart into separate nuclei and electrons, or "plasma". When the nuclei and elec- trons recombine they emit coloured light.
