Fluorescent light. Lit fluorescent light tube. Fluorescent lights consist of glass tubes containing a gas at a low pressure. A voltage is applied across the tube using metal electrodes at either end. The gas becomes ionised and produces light. The colour of the light produced depends upon the chemical which makes up the gas. Phosphor is sometimes coated on the inside of the tubes to alter the colour of the light produced.
