Caption

Electrical cable. Cutaway end of a two-core and earth electrical cable. The neutral (black) and live (red) wires are individually insulated. The earth wire is not. Electrical wires are made of copper, allowing them to carry electrical currents. This type of cable carries electricity in British homes as part of the mains and lighting circuits. These colours were used in the UK until April 2004, when they were changed to harmonise the colours with the rest of Europe. For the new colours, see T194/696.
