Van de Graaff generator. Electrical sparks discharging from the surface of a Van de Graaff generator. This apparatus is used to create extremely high voltages. A fabric belt collects charge from an external source, conveying it to a hollow metal sphere (left). With no way of escaping, the charge builds up until there is enough of a potential difference with the surroundings for it to escape onto nearby objects.
