Laser interferometer research. This laser interferometer is analysing a material's piezoelectrical ability. Piezoelectric materials are able to generate an electric potential in response to mechanical stresses. Only particular materials are piezoelectrical, such as crystals like quartz or certain ceramics. Photographed at the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington, UK.
