A technician produces a hologram of a statuette at the Grepa laboratory at the University of Strasbourg. A beam of laser light is split in two, part of the beam illuminating the subject before striking a photosensitive glass plate, the other part striking the plate directly. The combination of the two parts of the beam as they meet at the plate produces interference patterns which carry information about the subject's three- dimensionality. When the glass plate is later illuminated by laser light, the statuette appears as if in three dimensions.
