Bomb disposal: a radio-controlled robot approaches a home-made bomb. Robots, being more expendable than humans, are frequently used to identify suspect packages and take any necessary action. This robot is fitted with a video camera (black rectangle on top of arm) and a lamp for night work. The operator, at a safe distance, uses the camera to relay a view of the bomb to the command vehicle (background). The grab may be used to turn the suspect device for further inspection. The arm is also fitted with a gun, used to explode the bomb or to open doors (eg on a suspect car). In this training exercise, the bomb is cunningly disguised as a few sticks of dynamite.
