Robotics experiment. View of a technician working with the ROTEX robot arm. ROTEX consists of a six- jointed arm whose movement can be controlled remotely. Two virtual reality views are seen on the monitors on either side of the technician. At left is the view from the arm's two-fingered "hand", showing buttons on a control panel. At right is a view from the arm's base, showing the arm in relation to the control panel itself. ROTEX was carried into orbit on Space Shuttle Mission STS-55, between 26th April and 6th May 1993, as part of the Spacelab D2 project. It was used to study advanced autonomous robotics technology, using teleprogramming and artificial intelligence.
