Walking robot M2 being adjusted by roboticist Dan Paluska. M2 was designed to walk like a human, using fluid movements rather than stiff "robotic" patterns. It follows simple rules from computer simulations, making changes in response to local conditions. M2 possesses humanoid joints, "muscles" and "tendons". Sensors measure the angle of its joints and the forces on its muscles as it steps. It is hoped that robots like M2 will be used as reconnaissance workers in dangerous conditions. M2 was designed by roboticists at the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) Leg Laboratory, USA, and funded by DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency).
