Caption

Walking robot. Composite image of the robot M2 with the torso of roboticist Dan Paluska. M2 was designed to walk like a human, using fluid rather than stiff "robotic" movements. It follows rules from computer simulations, making changes in response to local conditions. M2 has humanoid joints, "muscles" and "tendons". Sensors measure the angle of its joints and the forces on its muscles as it steps. It is hoped that similar robots will be used for reconnaissance in dangerous conditions. M2 was designed by workers at the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) Leg Laboratory, USA, and funded by DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency).
