Robot Football. Robots used in the 1997 World Cup Robot Soccer (RoboCup '97) competition, with an orange "football". The international RoboCup prom- otes the development of intelligent robots that could be sent into hostile environments in the future. The competition will lead to advances in robot vision, sensors, mechanics & cooperation. These Microsystems Laboratory robots are less than 3 cm in diameter. RoboCup matches have two 5- minute periods of play between two teams of up to five robots, with a 10 minute interval between them to allow the robots to recharge their batter- ies. RoboCup '97 was held in Nagoya, Japan. Robo- Cup '98 will be held in Paris, France, in July.
