Robot cat. Tama, a robotic toy cat that reacts to human touch. Beneath the cat's fur are five touch sensors located on the head and body of the cat. Inside the cat's head are microphones which are sensitive to the volume of the human operators voice. The cat will react to the stimuli picked up by the microphone and sensors by displaying one of the six basic animal emotions. These are; satisfaction, anger, uneasiness, dislike, fear and surprise. It will also store information in its long-term memory. This allows the cat to develop its own unique personality. Tama was designed by Taknori Shibata of the Tsukuba Mechanical Engineering Laboratory (MEL), Japan.
