Robotic dog. Japanese toy robot dog AIBO (Artificial Intelligence Robot), playing with a ball with his owner. The robot has several dog-like behaviours, including barking, falling over and getting up, sleeping and walking. These are pre-programmed into its computer. The robot is activated by remote control but it also has a video camera in its head and pressure and motion sensors in its body. These allow it to respond to visual and physical cues from its owner. AIBO is also Japanese for buddy. The robot is manufactured by the Sony corporation. Photographed at the home of the Nozue family, Yokohama, Japan, in 1999.
