RoboCrane. A mobile RoboCrane mobile robotic lifting device under test at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), USA. RoboCrane was designed to lift heavy objects, but also to be lightweight and to position loads with extreme accuracy. The crane assembly consists of hydraulic support legs and steel cables which are fixed to the load. Sensors detect the tension in the cables, which is adjusted by a computer ten times per second to keep the load stable. This 2- metre tall prototype is mobile; a fixed 6-metre model has also been developed. Applications may include carrying heavy drilling equipment, or the handling and disposal of hazardous waste.
