Chewing robot. Mastication (chewing) robot used in dentistry research. The robot is composed of a human skull attached to electronic circuitry, levers and pulleys, which simulate the human facial muscles that make the jaw bite down. Sensors measure the position and velocity of the biting jaws and the force of mastication. The robot was developed to help dental scientists to learn more about the processes of biting and chewing. Photographed in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan.
