A microwave tower looming above a field in Essex. Towers such as this form the links in most modern telecommunications networks, relaying phone, telex and data communications. The aerials (dish & pill- box shaped) transmit and receive signals at microwave frequencies to and from other similar towers. The towers have to be positioned so as to ensure an unobstructed line of sight between them.
