Rural satellite dishes. These antennae are used to send radio and microwave signals to and from satellites orbiting the Earth. The parabolic curve of the dish part of the antenna reflects incoming signals and focuses them at the receiver (black). Satellites and satellite dishes are crucial for telecommunications from remote parts of the Earth, especially between oceanic islands. Photographed in 2003 on the island of Raa, part of the Maldives in the Indian Ocean.
