Hand holding a spray of polymer optical fibres. These fibres have a core of perspex and a thin outer coating of polymer of a lower refractive index, which prevents light "leaking" from the fibre wall because it gives total internal reflection. The optical fibres were obtained from a novelty domestic lamp of the "horsetail" type.
