Interference contrast light micrograph of a fibre optics wave guide of the type used for signal transmission in all aspects of communications. This particular type of fibre is known as a monomode. Note the central core of the fibre (denoted by parallel lines), which appears because of its different refractive index from the surrounding materials. It is along this inner section that the light signals travel. Magnification: X 64 at 35mm size. Photographed with transmitted light differential interference contrast.
