Fibre optics. Several optical fibres emerging from a cable. These fibres are made from a transparent optical material, usually glass, and can be used for transmitting computer data, sound, and images. Each fibre consists of a core with an outer cladding that has a lower refractive index. Light travelling through the fibre is contained within the core because of total internal refraction at the core/cladding boundary. This allows data to be transmitted for very long distances with little or no absorption. Optical fibre cables contain very fibre optics allowing high transmission capacity combined with flexibility.
