Fibre optics. Bundle of optical fibres emitting light. These flexible fibres, normally made of glass, can carry huge amounts of data at tremendous speeds. First, data is converted into a modulated light wave, a carrier light wave that has had the desired data superimposed onto it. The light then passes down the optical fibre, being totally internally reflected at its walls. Finally, the original data is decoded at the other end of the fibre. Fibre optics are also used in endoscopy, transmitting internal body images during examinations or operations.
