Dismantled capacitor. This is a device designed to store and release electric charge. The charge is stored in a rolled up cylinder of material seen at centre (brown). The external sleeves (plastic and metal) are at upper left. The lids of the cylinder (centre left and upper centre) contain the leads that connect to a circuit. The rolled up material consists of electrolytic capacitor paper (brown), a layer of aluminium oxide, an electrolytic liquid (the paper is wet), and aluminium foil. The charge is stored on the foil, while the paper, oxide and liquid are the dielectric. For this capacitor in its working state, see image T355/244.
