Transistors. View of several transistors (silver) welded to a circuit board (blue). Transistors have a wide variety of uses in electronics including amplification, rectification (the conversion of an alternating current into a direct one) and signal processing. Transistors have three wires attached to them, called the base, collector and emitter. These are attached to sections of semiconductor in the transistor which contain precise levels of impurities to determine their electrical properties.
