Optical communication. Photograph of a processed silicon wafer surrounded by optical fibres. Optical fibres are now used extensively in telecommunications. Coded pulses of laser light are sent down the fibres over great distances. The pulses are encoded and decoded by microprocessor- based systems. The marriage of microelectronics and fibre optics has revolutionised long-distance data transfer, allowing computers to 'speak' to each other over large distances.
