Micromechanics hybrid chip. Macrophotograph of a hybrid chip, on which is mounted a micromechanic accelerometer. A hybrid chip consists of several components mounted on a ceramic substrate and connected by wires. Although the components are separate, they must be connected together to work. Here, a micromechanic acceleration sensor (bar, lower right) is connected to a processor (larger rectangle, bottom left) and other components. This sort of circuit is used in the automobile industry as a sensor for triggering air-bags in an accident. Magnification x4.5 at 6x7cm size.
