Lithography master wafer. View of part of a master wafer used in the production of integrated circuits. This is a template placed in contact with a treated silicon wafer during the lithography process. During this process, the pattern of the master is duplicated on the surface of the wafer. Each dark square seen here will become an individual integrated circuit. Complicated circuits require several levels of patterning, which involves the sequential use of different templates. This is a fast and effective method of producing integrated circuits in large quantities.
