Micromechanic accelerometer. Light micrograph showing one end of an accelerometer made by the methods of micromechanics. The square at right is the inertial mass of the accelerometer. This is linked to the support beam at left by a very narrow 'neck'. On either side of the support beam are inductive detectors. During a high acceleration, the inertial mass moves relative to its rest position. This moves the central beam momentarily closer to one of the detectors, causing a signal to be generated. This tiny signal may then be amplified to activate another system, such as an air-bag in a car. Magnification x30 at 6x7cm size.
