Micromechanics. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of a selection of micromechanic components seen next to a fly's leg. The components are made using similar techniques to those employed in the manufacture of integrated circuits (silicon chips). At this small scale, silicon is as good as steel for mechanical purposes, but is much easier to work with. Magnification x20 at 6x7cm size.
