Array of computer terminals & displays at AT&T's telephone Network Control Centre (NOC), Bedminster, New Jersey, USA. The 72-screen array at the NOC is the command centre for AT&T's telephone network across the U.S., servicing all of the company's 114 interconnected switching centres nationwide. The software which drives the system & determines, for example, the most efficient path for routing long distance calls, is vulnerable to failure. In January 1990, a software error caused the virtual collapse of AT&T's network across the country. Nine hours were to pass before the system was restored.
