Computer tape. A large reel of magnetic tape loaded onto a computer. Magnetic tapes are used to store computer data in tape libraries. The tapes are cheap and can hold several hundred megabytes of data each. Unlike computer disks, however, they do not allow immediate access to their contents: the reel must be wound along to expose specific areas to the tape-reading heads. A second disadvantage is that magnetic tapes are highly vulnerable to fire.
