CD-ROM disc. View of a CD-ROM (Compact Disc Read- Only Memory) in front of a personal computer. A CD-ROM is a very powerful storage medium for data. Data is stored in digital form as a pattern of pits in an aluminium-coated plastic disc. A laser scans the disc and the non-pitted area reflects the laser beam to a photodetector. A single CD- ROM disc may store about 600 Megabytes of data, equivalent to some 300,000 pages of text. Although CD-ROMs cannot be altered after manufacture, they are widely used in high-volume educational and technical database applications.
