CD-ROMs. Compact discs used for storing computer data. These discs are known as CD-ROMs (Compact Disc Read-Only Memory). Images, sound and text can all be stored on compact discs. They are made of plastic pressed with a series of fine depressions. These depressions represent digital information and are capable of being read by laser. The encoded layer is coated with a film of metal to reflect laser light. On a single CD-ROM disc 600 megabytes or more, the equivalent of 300,000 pages of text, can be stored. Images, sound and text on multimedia CD-ROM discs can be accessed at random.
