Caption

Hard disk. Hard disk memory mechanism from a computer. The disk consists of a read/write head (metal arm, lower left) and a rigid hard disk (upper right) coated with magnetic material on both sides. The direction of magnetisation of tiny localised areas on the disk represents stored data as binary digits. Information can be accessed, or new data recorded, by means of small electromagnets in the read/write head. The disk rotates on a central spindle and the head moves radially to access different parts of the disk.
