Caption

Flatbed scanner CCD array. A charge-coupled device (CCD) array is the most common technique for image capture in flatbed or desktop scanners. CCD arrays comprise thousands of light sensitive diodes called photosites, which convert light energy (photons) into electrical energy (electrons). Most modern scanners comprise three linear arrays (centre), coated to filter red, green and blue light so that a full-colour image can be produced.
