The processor of a Cray X-MP/48 supercomputer, installed at the Atlas Centre of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Oxfordshire, U.K. in early January, 1987. The high speed and large processing capacity of the X-MP/48 is envisaged to be applied to simulation problems including: aircraft design, circulations of oceans and atmosphere, design of large scale integrated circuits and the development of novel pharmaceuticals. The machine will be operated by the Science & Engineering Research Council on behalf of U.K. Research Councils and Universities, and will link with established centres in Manchester and London to form a national supercomputer network.
