Met Office supercomputers. Close-up of a bank of 128-processor NEC SX-8 supercomputers at the Meteorological Office's headquarters in Exeter, Devon, UK. These computers, which came into full operation on 12 April 2005, have the ability to undertake 16 billion calculations per second per processor. They are used to produce weather forecasts and to simulate models for climate research.
