The Web is a global network connecting thousands of host computers for the free exchange of information. Information in the form of electronic hypertext is sent along telephone lines and by satellite, to form the so-called information superhighway. The Web was created at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory near Geneva, and started services in 1989.
