Millennium bug. Computer illustration showing the millennium bug as a microchip with the year 2000 written on it rearing over a computer circuit board. The millennium bug theory is that computers may misunderstand the change of digits from 99, representing 1999, to 00 as the year 2000 (Y2K) begins. This is because many computers only use the last two digits of each year on their internal calendars. Some people believe that computers may think it is 1900, resulting in miscalculations and computer system failures.
