AZT drug modelling. Computer molecular modelling of AZT, a drug used in the treatment of AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). A space-filling model of a molecule of AZT appears on the screen. AZT is also effective in reducing the complications of secondary infections and in treating the dementia that affects a proportion of AIDS victims. AZT (brand name Retrovir, manufactured by Burroughs- Wellcome) inhibits the action of reverse transcriptase, the AIDS viral enzyme that is crucial to the subversion of a victims's immune system. AZT has side effects; its toxicity to bone marrow may result in patients developing anaemia.
