Designers at Motorola Inc., Arizona, using a computer-aided design (CAD) package. CAD is invaluable in the design of micro-circuits, as changes may be made quickly and the effect on the whole circuit instantly calculated. The team are working on a miniature pressure-sensing device, used to measure the pressure in a car engine's exhaust manifold. Sensors such as this are linked to a small computer in the car, which in turn alters the operation of the engine to ensure the best fuel efficiency.
