Compact discs. Computer artwork of compact discs (CD's) floating in space around the Earth (top right). CD's are a means of data storage. They consist of a sheet of plastic and metal which has a surface covered in microscopic pits. A laser scans the surface as the disc rotates and detects the pits, which it converts into a stream of data. CD's can be used to store music, text, and digital images.
