Arctic transport, Lancaster Sound, Nunavut, Canada. Airboat resting on top of ground ice and passenger plane taking off in the background. Airboats are flat bottomed boats propelled by a large above-water propeller. This type of vehicle is used when the arctic sea ice begins to melt, making passage too difficult for snowmobiles and normal boats. Airboats are used to transport tourists, explorers, freight and search and rescue operations. The remote sites of the high arctic can often only be reached by airplane or airboat.
