Tupolev Tu-154 airliner taking off. A product of the design bureau of Andrei Tupolev in the Soviet Union, the Tu-154 is a three-engined, narrow-body design that carries up to 180 passengers. Its range is up to 6,600km (in the Tu-154M version) and was used extensively by Soviet bloc and 'friendly' African countries. Some 1026 aircraft were built, with the majority used in the Soviet Union. In military service as a transport aircraft, the Tu-154 had the NATO reporting name "Careless". This example, photographed in 2005 at Moscow, is in the colours of the Russian state airline, Aeroflot. As of 2014, only 100 remain in service across the world.
