Front view of the High-Speed Surface Transport (HSST). The HSST is a Japanese design of maglev (magnetic levitation) train. The train is propelled by linear motors, the electromagnetic fields of which also levitate the train above its 'rails'. In 1978, the HSST reached a speed of 307 kilometres per hour in trials.
