Driving simulator. Man in a virtual reality driv- ing simulator. The display screen fills the user's visual field so that he feels immersed in the simulated environment. Sensors in the car and on the driver's helmet detect the movements of his arms, legs, & eyes. A computer matches these move- ments to stored computer models of driver behav- iour, allowing it to quickly determine the driv- er's action. The computer warns the driver if he is about to do anything dangerous, such as collide with a vehicle that he has not seen. This system could be installed in cars to reduce the number of accidents. Photographed during "smart car" resear- ch at a Nissan laboratory in Massachusetts, USA.
