Driving simulator. Man in a virtual reality driv- ing simulator. The driver responds to an image projected onto a large screen (not seen here). Sensors in the car and on the driver's helmet detect the movements of his arms, legs, & eyes. A computer matches these movements to stored computer models of driver behaviour, allowing it to quickly determine the driver's action. The computer warns the driver if he is about to do anything dangerous, such as collide with a vehicle that he has not seen. This system could be installed in cars to reduce the number of accidents. Photographed during "smart car" resear- ch at a Nissan laboratory in Massachusetts, USA.
