Caption

Research submarine 'Nautile' at the surface. This three-man mini-submarine can operate to a depth of 6 kilometres. It is titanium-hulled and carries enough oxygen to last five hours underwater. It is owned by the French research institute IFREMER, and is used for underwater surveys and collecting samples. It is equipped with cameras, lights and robotic arms (centre left). The main propeller is at the rear (lower right), but the submarine has four motors that enable it to move easily in any direction. A robot probe 'Robin' (not seen) can detach and be directed by remote control. Nautile is best known for diving to the wreck of the Titanic in the Atlantic.
