Light micrograph of a series of indents in a metal surface. The indents result from microhardness testing, also known as the Vickers hardness test. A pyramid-shaped diamond, with the point facing downwards, is glued to a special, movable front element of a microscope's objective lens. Looking through the microscope, the researcher can see around the diamond to select the exact part of the specimen to be tested. A known weight then drives the front of the objective onto the material & the diamond produces a tiny indent, a few micrometres across. Measurement of the indent gives a precise value of the material's hardness at that spot. Magnification: x70 at 35mm size. Ref: MICROCOSMOS, fig. 8.39, p. 172.
